Is an F or M visa right for me?

The process of obtaining your visa is often complicated and there is no fixed timeline to know when you will be issued a visa even if you are approved. It is best to consult with an attorney once you are set on travelling to the U.S.

  • For F and M visas, applicants need to fulfill the following requirements:
  • You must be enrolled in an "academic" educational program
  • Schooling must be full time
  • You must be proficient in English or enrolled in courses to this end
  • You must have enough funding to support yourself during the proposed course of study
  • You must maintain residence in your native country with no intention or relinquishing it
  • Your school needs to be approved by the Student and Exchange Visitors Program, Immigration & Customs Enforcement

F visa students are forbidden from working off-campus during their first year of schooling but may work on campus with some conditions. M visa students can seek employment in practical training only once they have finished their studies.
