Understanding the Process of Naturalization
Naturalization is the process by which you may apply to become a U.S. citizen. In order to do so, you must fulfill all of the requirements set forth by the U.S. Congress under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Steps to Becoming a U.S. Citizen
In order to become a U.S. citizen, you must first qualify and meet the eligibility requirements. Eligibility requirements include being at least 18 years of age, maintaining a continuous residency in this country, and being of good moral character. There are several paths for naturalization.
- Paths to naturalization include the following:
- You've been a lawful permanent resident for 5 years;
- You are the spouse of a U.S. citizen and have been a LPR for at least 3 years;
- You qualify through military service; and
- Your child may qualify if you are a U.S. citizen, your child was born outside of the U.S. but currently resides outside of the U.S., and meets all eligibility requirements.
